Mount Eryx in Sicily was a fortress town which came to fame in the First Punic War, being alas conquered by the Romans in 249 BC. The story of Eryx however was older still. An important temple to Aphrodite having been built there by the Greeks. It was actually this temple's worship of Aphrodite which would eventually in 217 BC make an official entrance into the Roman state cult as that of the goddess Venus.
