Depicted here is a lar, a spirit of a Roman family's ancestors. Such little figurines would be kept in a little household shrine called the lararium within the house and would be taken out on special family occasions like weddings, births or birthdays. Meanwhile on most days perhaps prayers would be said, even small sacrifices made to them, at the lararium where they would be kept.
