The Infantry cohorts, like the ala, were also organized on the basis of units of roughly five hundred and roughly a thousand and, like the legions, were divided into centuries. The cohort of five hundred consisted of six centuries, that of a thousand consisted of ten centuries.
Like with a legion, each century consisted of eighty men.
The commander of the infantry cohorts was the praefectus cohortis, who was of a rank inferior to that of a cavalry auxiliary commander.
Under him each century was lead by a centurion and the other officers optio, signifer, tesserarius.
